But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a 2023 computer-animated adventure film based on Nintendo's Mario video game franchise. Produced by Illumination, Universal Pictures, and Nintendo, and distributed by Universal, it was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel. The ensemble voice cast includes Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and Fred Armisen. The film features an origin story for the brothers Mario and Luigi, Italian-American plumbers who are transported to an alternate world and become entangled in a battle between the Mushroom Kingdom, led by Princess Peach, and the Koopas, led by Bowser.

After the critical and commercial failure of the 1993 live-action Mario film, Nintendo became reluctant to license its intellectual properties for film adaptations. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto became interested in developing another film when Nintendo was bringing its older games to the Virtual Console service, and through Nintendo's work with Universal Parks & Resorts to create Super Nintendo World, he met Illumination founder Chris Meledandri. By 2016, the two were discussing a Mario film and, in January 2018, Nintendo announced that it would collaborate with Illumination and Universal to produce it. Production was underway by 2020, and the cast was announced in September 2021.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie premiered in Los Angeles on April 1, 2023. It was then released in the United States on April 5, 2023, and is scheduled for Japan on April 28, 2023, with both releases distributed by Universal Pictures. Though it did have a stronger critical reception than the 1993 film, the film divided critics, who praised its animation, musical score, and faithfulness to the source material, but felt it prioritized fan service and easter eggs over plot and character development.

Italian plumbers Mario and Luigi own and operate the unsuccessful Super Mario Bros. Plumbing business in Brooklyn. Their father disapproves of Mario's decision to leave a high-paying job under the antagonistic Spike to start the business. After seeing a significant manhole leak reported on the news, Mario and Luigi go underground to fix the plumbing, but are both sucked into a pipe and separated in the process.

Mario lands in the Mushroom Kingdom and meets Toad, who informs him that Luigi has ended up in the "dark lands", under the control of the evil Bowser, who wants to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom and marry Princess Peach. Toad takes Mario to Peach, while Luigi is captured by Bowser's forces and caged above a sea of lava.

At Peach's castle, Peach reveals her plan to recruit the Kong Kingdom to help against Bowser, and agrees to take Mario along after he eventually almost completes an obstacle course, with Toad coming as well. On their journey, Peach shares that she does not know the full extent of her origins, having been taken in by the residents of the Mushroom Kingdom as a baby and eventually being crowned their princess; Mario speculates that she may be from the same world he is. At the Kong Kingdom, King Cranky Kong agrees to help on the condition that Mario defeat his son, Donkey Kong, in a fight. After a shaky start, Mario powers up into Cat Mario and defeats Donkey Kong.

Mario, Peach, Toad, and the Kongs use karts to drive to Bowser, but they are ambushed by his army on Rainbow Road. When a part of the road is destroyed, Mario and Donkey Kong plummet to the ocean and are consumed by a Maw-Ray, and the other Kongs are captured. Peach and Toad drive back to the Mushroom Kingdom and urge the citizens to evacuate. Peach then says that she will marry Bowser to stop Toad from being tortured. Meanwhile, Mario and Donkey Kong escape the Maw-Ray through the rocket from Donkey Kong's kart, and go to Bowser.

At the wedding reception, taking place in front of all the caged people, Peach powers up with an Ice Flower and freezes Bowser, while the caged people are freed. Toad and Donkey Kong help to fight off Bowser's army while Mario diverts a Banzai Bill away from Peach's castle and into the pipe that sent him to the Mushroom Kingdom. However, this causes elements from the Mushroom Kingdom to be transported to Brooklyn, where Mario and Luigi obtain a Super Star and use its invincibility to work together to defeat the freed Bowser, who is subsequently shrunk with a mushroom and placed in a bottle. The residents of Brooklyn celebrate the Mario brothers, including Spike and Mario's father, with the latter saying that he is proud of him. In the aftermath, Mario and Luigi become residents of the Mushroom Kingdom.

In a mid-credits scene, the still-shrunk Bowser plays a song, only to be hit by a guard. In a post-credits scene, a white egg with green spots hatches, upon which Yoshi is heard.
